iKNOW Politics - The International Knowledge Network of Women in Politics

"While the winds of change have begun to blow, women remain on the fringes of political power. That is why the creation of iKNOW Politics, the premier network for women in politics, will provide women with the tools necessary to participate meaningfully in every facet of political life."
—Her Excellency Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, President of Liberia

NDI and its partner organizations officially launched the iKnow Politics network at the United Nations earlier in February 2007.

The launch ceremony of iKNOW Politics served as the official announcement of the formation of the network and the commencement of its activities.  At the event, a panel of experts outlined the projected benefits of iKNOW Politics to women’s full political participation worldwide.  The input and expertise of participants was encouraged to ensure that the network is accessible, useful, and effective.

Approximately 300 participants attended the launch and included representatives of the United Nations member states and staff, government officials, non-governmental organizations, think tanks, women’s groups and activists, media, and academia.

The event took place during the Fifty-First Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. The launch was sponsored by the founding partners of iKNOW Politics: the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).
