Final Report on Moroccan 2007 Legislative Election

NDI organized international delegation to observe the September 7, 2007 Moroccan legislative elections. The 52 international experts who comprised the delegation visited 375 polling stations in 12 regions on election day and met with voters, citizens, government officials, political party representatives, candidates, domestic observers, representatives of civil society organizations, national and international journalists and academics.

Overall, NDI's observers concluded that despite certain technical issues, the voting went smoothly and was characterized by a spirit of transparency and professionalism. The delegation concluded, however, that the low voter turnout and significant number of protest votes in the election suggest that Moroccan authorities will need to undertake further political reforms in order to encourage widespread engagement in the political process.
